Extended day care

In addition to the normal school day, Charlton-on-Otmoor Church of England Primary School also offers parents the option of extended day care through the Breakfast Club and CAST:

CAST (Charlton After School Team) is an after school club whose aim is to provide the highest quality of childcare and play. CAST is open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3.15pm to 5.30pm and costs £9 per child per session. The children are free to choose from a wide range of play and creative activities both indoors and out. This includes activities such as construction sets; playmobil; Lego and kNex; craft activities using a wide range of materials, junk modeling, paint and clay; role play and dressing up. Water, sand, balls, hoops and games such as table tennis are available outside. A quiet area is always available where the children can rest, read a book and chill out. During the sessions, children are provided with a healthy snack and fruit and vegetables are always on offer. Breakfast club runs along similar lines but is available 5 days a week from 7.50 to 8.50am at a cost of £3.50 per child per session. Both can be booked through the school’s Tucasi online system in the same way that lunches are currently ordered.

Film club

The school Film Club is called COOLFILM which stands for Charlton-on-Otmoor Loves films. It is run through a national charity called Into Film. There is a website which can be found at www.filmclub.org

In order to use the website you need a password and the login details. To get these just ask Mrs Finlay. Once you are able to login to the website there is news about films, competitions and much more. You can write a review of a film that you have seen or you can make suggestions for films that you would like to see at Film Club.

There are usually two films per term and they are on Fridays. The dates are advertised on posters at the school and in the school newsletter. Film Club is straight after school and finishes at 5.15pm. All full-time pupils at the school can come but parents are asked to exercise their own judgement about whether their child is old enough to sit through a film. There is always an interval when we serve a drink and a snack.

Gardening Club

Gardening club takes place every Tuesday afternoon. All the children are involved in gardening and work in different groups: Sycamore, Ash, Elm, Holly, Willow and Chestnut.

The children work out of doors on a wide variety of practical and challenging activities ranging from building bird boxes and constructing bug hotels to growing vegetables from seed, making leaf mould, pond dipping and planting a woodland garden.

Young Leaders

Young Leaders takes place twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday morning break-times. All Year 6  children become a Young Leader in their final year in school. They plan, organize and deliver a game or activity for the Year 1 and 2 children. Following each session, which is organized on a rota system, they evaluate their session to improve future activities. The Young Leaders learn organisational, leadership and communication skills. It also encourages good citizenship towards their younger peers.

School Council

The School Council is made up of two representatives from each year group. Voting takes place at the beginning of the school year and a new council is formed. There are 14 councillors because the year 5 representatives from the previous year remain on the council into their year 6 and become either the Chair and secretary or the BLIP Kidz representatives. This also keeps some continuity. The Council meets weekly on a  Tuesday afternoon. Minutes are produced which are shared at weekly Class Council meetings. At these meetings suggestions are made about anything to do with school life and they are brought to school council meetings, therefore, giving all children a chance to voice their ideas and opinions. The School Council arrange assemblies, fundraising and fun events.
