Autumn Term Year 5/6
Welcome back. I hope you had a lovely summer holiday!
As you are aware, I will be spending a couple days a week in the office and Mrs Ellam will be teaching the class.
Autumn term curriculum
This term the topic across the whole school is ‘Paint a picture’. In Year 5 and 6 we will be looking at using fabric to create art. We will be dying and printing using different techniques and using our science topic on the humans, circulation system and cells as our inspiration. We are starting English off by reading ‘When the whales came’.
During the latter half of Autumn term the whole school topic is ‘Alien invasion. We will learn about the solar system and its impact on earth (day/night) and hopefully making moon buggies. We will be reading ‘Skellig’ in English.
Reading and homework
I will issue your child with a reading book as quickly as I can. Homework will be sent home today and spelling test/ homework marking day will be a Friday. Please ensure the first lot of homework is complete and spellings learnt by Friday 14th September.
100 books to read before you leave year 6
The children will have a list of 100 books to read before leaving year 6. I would like the children to look through, see what they have read and then have a go at reading as many from the list.
PE will be on Friday afternoons. Your child needs to have named kit in on these days otherwise they will not be able to participate. Girls with long hair need to either have it tied up or keep a hair bobble in their kit bag. The children will be swimming on Thursday afternoons until October half term. Yet again, they will need their swimming kit, swimming hat and googles.
Year 5 and 6 are lucky to be taking part in music with Mr Probert this year learning a brass instrument on a Monday afternoon. There will be no charge to the parents for this.
In year 5/6 I encourage your child to have a drink of water when returning from the playground, sports and when working at their tables. Please make sure they bring a named water bottle in to school. This will need to go home every night so that fresh water can be added ready for the next day.
Before the Summer holidays, the children put together the class ‘Golden Rules’. The children decide on what rules should be followed in the classroom to make the class a happy learning environment. These then feed into the School’s Behaviour Policy. A copy will be sent home for you to refer to and reinforce and the Behaviour Policy can be found on the school website.
Thank you in advance for all your help and support this term.
